Synopsis
The Noh play "Raiden" is based on the legend that after Sugawara no Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu and died, he became the god of thunder and wreaked havoc on the Imperial Palace.
The spirit of Sugawara no Michizane appears before the head priest of Mount Hiei, Hosshobo Sojo. The two, who had a deep teacher-student relationship during their lifetime, are happy to be reunited, but Michizane asks the Sojo not to come to the Imperial Palace even if called to pray, as he is about to go to the palace to seek revenge. When the Sojo repeatedly replies that he cannot refuse an imperial decree, Michizane becomes enraged and disappears from the scene.
Sugawara no Michizane soon appears at the Imperial Palace in the form of the god of thunder. He avoids the Sojo, who is praying, and rampages through the Shishinden, Seiryoden, and other palace buildings one after another. However, when the Emperor demotes Tenman Daijizai Tenjin from his official position, his rage subsides and he rises into the sky on a black cloud.
The one-tatami-mat platform on the Noh stage is likened to the Shishinden and Seiryoden halls, and the spectacular play in which Michizane, who has transformed into the god of thunder, and the psychic powers of the priest clash is a truly spectacular piece.
The Kyogen play "Thunder" tells the story of a thunderbolt that falls from the clouds and strikes its hip bone, so it asks a quack doctor who happens to be there to treat it. When the doctor gives the thunder acupuncture treatment, the thunder exaggerates its complaints of pain, but when the doctor asks for the treatment fee, the thunder says it has no money and cannot pay. The almost human-like thunder character is sure to draw laughs.
The final dance will be "Himuro," in which Himuro Myojin, the god of ice, blesses the world with a dynamic and dashing dance, and the popular autumn piece "Matsukaze" will be performed as a "Wind Noh" piece.
This year's Atamiza Autumn Performance is a collaboration with the special exhibition "Korin's National Treasure 'Red and White Plum Blossoms Screen' x Important Cultural Property 'Wind Gods and Thunder Gods Screen.'" Enjoy the various expressions of thunder, which has long been revered and worshipped as a symbol of bountiful harvests that brings rain and blessings, along with the special exhibition.
