Urushi Entrance (Main Entrance)
The entrance is a large lacquered door designed by Living National Treasure Murose Kazumi. The contrast between the vermilion and black lacquer was designed by contemporary artist Sugimoto Hiroshi, and is inspired by the "katami-gaeshi" style of dress that was popular during the Momoyama period.
B
Golden Tea House
This is a reproduction based on the historical fact that in the New Year of 1586, Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought a prefabricated golden tea room into the small palace within the Kyoto Imperial Palace to offer tea to the then Emperor, Emperor Ogimachi, and held a tea ceremony using golden utensils. Hideyoshi used this golden tea room for the Kitano tea ceremony in 1586, and it is known that he had it brought from Osaka and used it for a tea ceremony when he went to Nagoya, Hizen, to campaign in Korea in 1587. It is believed to have disappeared with the fall of Osaka Castle. Please rediscover the aesthetic sense of the Momoyama period, which displays contrasting aspects of lavish extravagance, also known as the Golden Age, and tranquil wabi-suki.

Sugimoto Hiroshi's masterpiece, "Seascape Atami," is on display on the wall.

Exhibition rooms 1, 2, 3
The 2017 renovation, designed by the New Material Laboratory, headed by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida, created an exhibition space that incorporates numerous ingenious features to maximize the appeal of the artworks. The display cases are modeled after a tokonoma alcove, with tatami mats made from washi paper used as display stands. Low-reflection, high-transmittance glass is used, and a black plaster wall is installed behind the viewer, minimizing the presence of the glass.
