Echizen ware tsubo jar

Data

Era Kamakura period (13th cent.)

Explanation

This jar has a particularly pronounced shoulder, a trend often observed in jars from Kamakura period. The linear form amplifies the prominence of the sharp angle leading to the narrow neck and base. The mouth is in the trumpet-bell shape with the chamfered lip. The thoroughly fired body is reddish-brown, with dark green natural glaze running from the mouth over the shoulder. The cross impressed on the shoulder is an atelier identifier. There are only a very few extant jars of this type that are as intact as this one.
