Explanation
This figural haniwa represents a male in formal attire: locks of hair in loops, beaded necklace, and a triangular crown on the head. This is an especially well-crafted piece, considering that many figural haniwas have the lower half of the body abbreviated. Its details include the tunic tied with strings in two places, the pleated trousers the bottoms of which are tied above the knees with drawstrings, and the large sward thrust under the waist sash. The figure’s face has an enigmatic expression, with large eyes and a slender mouth, between which a relatively big nose strikes a good balance. This figure is unglazed but has sufficiently hard texture and a brilliant reddish-brown color.
