Explanation
This rare piece of Sue pottery bowl has a short sturdy leg that holds up the cup which slightly widens toward the mouth. Some raised cups of the fifth-century ca. Sue pottery exhibit similar styles, but this vessel has a significantly deeper bowl than those. The overall impression is one of fluidity. An ash glaze smoothly runs over the dark gray body. In Edo period, the bowl was used to serve tea. Previously, it was owned by Bandō Mitsugorō the Eighth.
