Sue pottery long neck bottle

Data

Era Nara period (7th cent.)

Explanation

This long-necked bottle, produced in eastern Japan, retains characteristics of the pottery of Kofun period (300–538 CE) with its trumpet-bell mouth and pronounced shoulder. The Sue pottery production declined in western Japan around the seventh entury, and in turn kilns in eastern Japan began to thrive. Oxidation firing became the mainstream firing method from the end-tenth to eleventh century, and the Sue pottery from this period show reddish-brown colors, as in this vessel. Its assertive form bears the sense of zeal that gave birth to Japan’s proper ceramics yet to be flourished.
