Explanation
This large jar of Tanba ware has an assertive, ample body, a rare example that retains the characteristics of classical Tanba earthenware. Five to six wide strips of clay form the body and shoulder, which narrows sharply toward the neck and rises perpendicularly to the small mouth. A thin engraved line runs parallel to the lip on the inside, a mark of classical style and which indicates the Inariyama kiln as the site of production. The vessel in a dark chocolate color has no traces of natural glazes, and the smooth surface suggests that it was formed on a potter’s wheel.
