Sanage ware long neck bottle with ash glaze

Data

Era Heian period (9th cent.)
Size MD.9.7 D.21.8 BD.12.9 H.29.5

Explanation

This long-necked bottle is made from quality clay thrown on a potter’s wheel. The well-defined neck is formed separately and attached to the round body. An ash glaze in deep yellow-green trickled down and turned emerald-green in places. Sanage ware, from the namesake region in Nagoya, thrived when the long-established Sue pottery production started to decline, and it was regarded to be of superior quality only next to imported Chinese ceramics and porcelains.
