Explanation

This is a personal letter written with kana phonetic script by Toshinari ( father of Fujiwara-no-Sadaie ), a leading poet of the late Heian through early Kamakura periods. It describes the great joy and honor he felt at his 90th birthday celebration given at the imperial court on November 23, 1203. He died a year later, and thus this work shows the calligraphic style of the last years of his life. It purports strength unbelievable for a man in his nineties.
