Explanation
It was in the Yuan dynasty that the production of blue-and-white began in earnest. Typical blue and white of this period are decorated with motifs painted in bold strokes over the entire surface of the vessels in underglaze blue of a dark subdued tone. This large dish is a classic Yuan piece featuring the characteristic spiky leaves and flowers with pointed petals. The dish, unusually large for its type and decorated in underglaze blue of a beautiful color, is an excellent example of a Yuan blue-and-white.
