Explanation

This is said to be a self-portrait of an aging Katsumochi sitting in a bamboo chair with a bamboo cane. He moved from Fukui to Edo in 1637 at the age of 60 where he worked for the shōgun’s family and died at the age of 73. The superb individual depiction and precise line strokes attest to his mastery. The Iwasa family in Fukui has kept the painting together with the family’s chronology and a letter in Katsumochi’s own hand.
