Explanation
This is said to be a scene from “Azumakudari (Narihira's Journey to the East Wilderness) as described in Episode 9 of The Tales of Ise”. The depiction of the nobleman, his retinue, trees, the streak of mist and the overall design are of excellent quality compared to the painter’s other works based on historical figures. The depiction of people and clothing pattern exhibits the refined technique of Yamato-e painting while Chinese painting techniques are employed for the trees. Such eclectic style is characteristic of Katsumochi’s painting.
