Explanation
This work depicts Ariwara-no-Narihira, thought to be the hero of “The Tales of Ise” visiting the west wing of a mansion where his former love, the noble Lady Nijō, used to live. The delicate features; his pensive face with almond eyes and hooked nose are expressed well. The roof and the mountain in the background are depicted as though melting in the golden clouds. Such dream-like sensation flowing from the scene is a characteristic of illustrated tales attributed to Sōtatsu.
