Explanation

From the thin faces and mild expressions, the smooth brushstrokes that show no waste and the serene color schemes, this work is considered to be the typical painting of beauties by Hokusai during the earlier half of his career. The standing courtesan and the sitting geisha do not show the exaggerated expressions unique to Hokusai seen in his later works during the Bunka era ( 1804 - 17 ) and the calm ambience is splendid.
