Explanation
This type of tea caddy is known as "shibugami-de" for the color of the glazed surface is very much like that of shibugami (mulberry paper lacquered with persimmon tannin). This piece is named "Yamazakura" or wild cherry, perhaps because its coloring resembles wild cherry tree leaves, or because of its simple rustic beauty. The body of the tea caddy, which gradually broadens from the shoulder to the base, is decorated with two incised vertical lines. It is a chūkō-meibutsu and comes with a box with inscriptions by Kobori Enshū.
