Explanation
The dish is considered a representative masterpiece of Ko-Kutani ware. Large and round, it has a simple shape typical of Ko-Kutani ware, but the design is exceptionally elegant and beautiful. In the well of the dish, on a white ground enclosed within an octagonal frame, are beautifully composed taikoseki rocks and peony flowers painted in overglaze enamels of dark purple, green, yellow, and blue. The perimeter is likewise decorated in deep and rich colors and features designs of shippo-tsunagi(interlocking circles) and yomodasuki (crossed diagonals) painted in overglaze enamels of dark tones.
