The 4th Kōgei Dining in Hiroshima
2023.03.04(Sat)
Overview
The Kōgei Dining is an experience-oriented program organized since 2019 as part of the Japan Cultural Expo.
The Expo theme “Humanity and Nature in Japan” relates to the inseparable relationship between the ways in which people understand and appreciate nature and many forms of arts in Japan they have enjoyed over generations. Most prominent examples of this relationship are seen in the Japanese cuisine, kōgei (crafts), and traditional performing arts.
This program offers participants an exclusive opportunity to fully appreciate the beauty of the crafts in their “practical use” through the staging of a course of refined meal.
It also provides an opportunity to enrich the experience through conversations with some of the kōgei artists who support this initiative. This is a rare opportunity to be better acquainted with the art of crafting explained by the creators themselves. Moreover, some works of kōgei craft are available for purchase, so you can take them home to extend the enjoyment into your everyday life.
The eateries at MOA Museum of Art also make their contributions to promote this initiative of culinary culture. Restaurant Hana-no-Chaya and La Pâtisserie par Toshi Yoroizuka, among other establishments, mainly use organic produce and serve dishes that are full of the local savour of Atami.
This year’s event will be arranged around a meal served using urushi-lacquered vessels created by Living National Treasure artist Murose Kazumi and Aizu urushi lacquerware, as well as kōgei craft items by artists from the Kanto region and central Japan. Also, a unique artistic performance is to be enjoyed, presented by a special duo of the world-renowned pianist Martha Argerich and Living National Treasure principal nō performer Otsuki Bunzō of the Kanze school.
