Calligraphy: Precept Addressed to His Pupil

Chushi Fanqi was a representative Zen priest of the latter half of the Yuan dynasty. He learned calligraphy from Zhao Ziang, a distinguished calligrapher, and acquired a shapely classical writing style. This writing on the Zen enlightenment, was a farewell gift to Shippei Sukai, a Japanese student in China, who later founded Kōjaku-ji Temple in Suō (present Yamaguchi prefecture). It was written in 1353, when Chushi was 57 years old.
