Explanation
Blue and white refers to white porcelain with decoration painted in cobalt blue. The earlier pieces produced in the Yuan period are vigorous and full of energy and have motifs executed in bold strokes. This bowl is decorated on the interior bottom with a roundel featuring two mandarin ducks on a lotus pond, surrounded by a frieze of peony scroll and another of chrysanthemum scroll, and on the exterior with lotus scrolls above a base frieze of lotus petals. The dish, displaying the typical style of Yuan, is noteworthy for the delicate expression of the motifs.
