Explanation
Hori-mishima bowls are believed to have been produced from around 1609 in the Pusan kilns on order from Japan. Fashioned after the old Mishima bowls, they were made as tea bowls for chanoyu. This shallow bowl is decorated on the exterior with a brushwood fence pattern in two rows. The interior wall has the same brushwood fence pattern in three rows and stamped florets on the bottom inlaid with white slip. The bowl is an elegant example of hori-mishima and is recorded in the "Taishō Meikikan".
