Overview
Many forms of arts in Japan have been enriched by the ways in which people have understood and appreciated nature over generations. Most prominent examples of this are seen in the Japanese cuisine, kōgei (crafts), and traditional performing arts.
This program offers participants an exclusive opportunity to fully appreciate, through the staging of an elaborate meal, the beauty of the crafts in their “practical use.” The meal is a showcase of locally-sourced organic produce, prepared with traditional recipes rooted in the Fukuoka region. The Atami event will enjoy a buyo performance by Bando Tamasaburo, a Living National Treasure in this traditional stage art. In Fukuoka, the event is organized in tandem with the Japan Traditional Art Exhibition (tour in Fukuoka), with opportunities to socialize with prominent kōgei artists/artisans. A talk show invites Imaizumi Imaemon, Suzuta Shigeto, and Fukushima Zenzō. You can browse and purchase the works of kōgei crafts at both events.
Murose Kazumi, Living National Treasure in urushi art, says, “when we create, we always think of those who will take our works into their hands and use them—our genuine wishes for their wellbeing and happiness are imprinted in the crafts; this is what kōgei represents.” Works of kōgei can mediate the delight in beauty between its creator and user. They facilitate an intangible communication between the two as the user comes to appreciate the creator’s dedication. The Kōgei Dining is designed to bring out the unique aesthetic value of kōgei crafts by allowing participants to experience as opposed to simply observe them.

Support people of the Tohoku region
People of Fukushima and their local industries still suffer from the unfounded fear among the general public in relation to the Fukushima Daiichi aftermath. As our contributions to the support for them, we work together with the region’s Aizu-nuri urushi-ware artisans to create bowls and table trays for Kōgei Dining. For the meals, we will serve the sake “MUISHIN” from the local brewery.
