Explanation

Portrait painting in Japan gave rise to superb pieces of individualistic depiction during the Kamakura period, influenced by the tradition of portrait paintings and portraits of Zen priests. This work is said to be a portrait of Minamoto-no-Yorimasa. The contrast between the stylized straight-lined formal costume and the facial features expressed in detail is distinctive. One of his poems is written on the green sheet in the top right corner. Formerly owned by the Kanō family.
